How The Experts Shop - Written for farfetch.com

The new season has kicked off and we’ve drafted in Laura Booty , in-store expert at super chic Feathers in Knightsbridge  for advice …

Special Occasions

‘When you’re on the lookout for that perfect outfit for an event, you can never find it.  Avoid this shopping vortex by doing research online, or find inspiration from the pages of a magazine. Don’t be afraid to ask shop assistants or e-tailors for advice. They know their stock better than anyone else.’

Sales

‘Sales can be overwhelming even for professionals.   So
•    Make sure you’re in the right frame of mind - give yourself plenty of time and minimize any distractions.
•    Think about what’s missing from your closet and what it is you really want..
•    It’s easy to be swayed by something just because it’s discounted but buy clothes because you love them and not just because they’re cheaper.’

Shape

‘If you’re not sure what suits your body it’s just a matter of trial and error; try different shapes to see what nips you in at the waist, elongates your legs or lifts your bottom. Pick a shop assistant who’s either a similar body shape or one whose style you like; they’ll probably have a good understanding of what you’re after.’

Essentials

‘I always spend more money on items like coats, shoes and bags - these are the pieces that will be worn the most and for more than just one season. Identify which items you always return to and then mix in more trend led pieces to update your look each new season.’

Trends

‘Never buy something that doesn’t suit you in order to follow a trend. Fashion is about style and personal taste. If leopard print is a must-have, you don’t have to wear it head to toe to make a statement, instead try starting with an accessory.’
